A healthy diet, sound sleep and clean atmosphere can soothe and prevent sore, itchy and red eyes. Sometimes, sore eyes can also associate other eye infections like  Blepharitis and dry eyes. Hence, it is essential to contact an eye care professional at the earliest, if you experience any kind of reddishness or soreness in your eyes.


Remedies for Dry and Itchy Eyes


You can try various soothing techniques like cool compresses or medications like antihistamines to obtain relief from the itchiness of your eyes. Some of the common methods to soothe dry and itchy eyes are:

·       Avoid touching your eyes or scratching them. Wash your hands frequently to avoid the spread of infection .

·       Wash the areas around your eyes with warm water and baby shampoo. This will aid in removing the debris and irritants easily.

·       Use warm cloth to remove any discharge, by gently wiping them away.

·       Artificial tear refreshers or eye drops can aid in providing relief from dryness and itchiness. Lubricating drops are the best available option for the prevention of further irritation and inflammation.

·       Prevent blowing of hot air into the eyes directly, as they can aggravate the symptoms. Wear goggles or glasses to provide some relief while swimming or skiing.

·       Visit an eye doctor, if the above procedures do not provide any relief. The physician can prescribe an ointment or drops to soothe your eyes and relive the symptoms.

Home remedies for itchy watery eyes

Certain home remedies also work in an effective manner to help you overcome the problem of itchy red and watery eyes.

·       Omega 3 fatty acids play a great role in the restoration of moisture. Inclusion of supplements or foods rich in the Omega 3 fatty acids like cod liver oil, tuna, salmon and sardines can decrease the symptoms by around 60%.

·       The dryness problem can also occur due to lack of Vitamin-A in the body. This vitamin is highly essential to maintain the health of the eye cells as well as production of mucus to protect them. A diet with the inclusion of adequate Vitamin-A not helps to improve the condition of dry eyes, but also your vision.  Foods that contain the vitamin are carrots, spinach, yam and fish oil.

·       Wear protective sunglasses while moving out in the open. The glasses can prevent wind, dust and sun from irritating and drying the eyes. Glasses with a well-fitting frame can provide additional defense against the atmospheric effects.

·       If the problem occurs in the dry seasonal allergy months, you can use an internal humidifier to add moisture into the air. This can drastically reduce the dryness as well as the dust or pollen floating in the atmosphere.

·       You can place a piece of cool cucumber on the eyes for 10 minutes to soothe them and reduce the inflammation.
